Emma Crawford Coffin Races & Festival, Manitou Springs

Manitou Springs showcases the Coffin Races Festival on Oct. 28, a blend of history and hilarity. Cheer on costumed racers vying for titles in speed, creativity, and coffin design. Absent during the pandemic, the races returned in 2022, now better than ever.

Rooted deeply in Manitou’s history, the Coffin Races Festival began in 1995 when the Manitou Springs Chamber of Commerce organized the first-ever coffin races in the nation, honoring a beloved figure from its history, Emma Crawford. Emma arrived in Manitou Springs in 1889, seeking a remedy for her tuberculosis from the town’s renowned cold-water mineral springs. Enchanted by the picturesque mountain town, her one final wish was to be laid to rest atop Red Mountain. Tragically, Emma passed away in 1891. In a touching gesture of love and respect, her partner William Hildebrand — an engineer for the Pikes Peak Cog Railway — gathered 11 other people from Manitou and undertook the arduous task of carrying Emma’s coffin up the 7,200-foot slope. However, nature had its own plans. Almost four decades later, in 1929, after enduring year after year of harsh winters and spring downpours, Emma’s resting place was disrupted. Her coffin hurtled down the mountainside.  All that remained when discovered by local children were the casket’s handles, a nameplate, and some bones. Today, the coffin races not only celebrate the enduring spirit of Emma Crawford but also epitomize the resilient spirit of Manitou Springs and its inhabitants.
