The History of Triple Crown Casinos
A look at the history of the Triple Crown Casinos wouldn't be valuable unless you first looked at the community where the casinos are located. It seems fitting that Cripple Creek has always been known as a town of gamblers, just a different type of gambling has occurred throughout the years.
All the way back in 1873, Ferdinand Hayden ordered a survey of Cripple Creek, hoping it would turn into a booming gold district. By 1894, the mining district contained 150 active miles, producing $3 million a year. All of the 5,000 residents also had electric arc lights and a sophisticated water system.
After all of the success and the arrival of the radio, the area was ravaged by devastating fires in 1896. On April 25, half of the city was destroyed, including a good portion of the business district. Just four days after, the rest of the district burned down, causing the town council to ban all wood construction. However, the people banded together and rebuilt the city out of stone and brick in just a few months.
Since then, Cripple Creek has continued to prosper and evolve until 1903. That's when one of the bloodiest labor strikes in the history of Colorado caused gold production to be cut in half. Then, in World War II, the mining of gold ceased, causing many of the facilities to be shut down.
The region once had a population of 50,000 people, but by the 1950s, only about 2,000 people still lived in the community.
To preserve the history of the town, the residents turned to tourism. In 1990, Colorado voters legalized gambling in the state, and the first casino opened in 1991.
While it isn't a gold mining town anymore, people are still striking it rich at the Triple Crown Casinos, which consists of The Midnight Rose Casino, McGill's Casino, and The Brass Ass Casino.
The Midnight Rose Casino
Located on the Main Street of Cripple Creek is The Midnight Rose Casino. This 9,300 square-foot casino first opened in August 1992. When you step inside the Victorian building, you are instantly transported to years gone by.
This unique building still houses the original woodwork, showcasing the elegant life that the settlers lived. Today, it is filled with helpful staff that goes above and beyond to treat guests like the VIPs they are. The atmosphere is unparalleled to any other, and the rooms are all state-of-the-art.

McGills Hotel & Casino opened in November 1997 and offers 7,500 square feet of adventure-filled space. In fact, it is considered the most spacious casino in Cripple Creek, with a massive selection of slot machines and video poker to choose from. The Brass Ass Casino
In June 2005, the 2,600 square-foot casino opened in one of Cripple Creek's most historic buildings. The Brass Ass Casino sets the perfect ambiance for a weekend of fun, with its vintage street lamps, original lighted signs from the Pool Hall, and western building façade. In fact, this casino was named after the painted wooden brass ass now located in one of the table games room. This brass donkey is one of the originals that launched the boats during the 1893 World Exposition held in Chicago.
